October 10 2008 FEA Stateside Update

Dear Colleagues,

Recertification Credits: Project READ is an independent study program designed for busy educators who wish to remain on the "cutting edge" in their chosen disciplines and who desire earning college credit for recertification and pay lane changes. Project READ was developed by the University of San Diego Division of Continuing Education in conjunction with educators from the Department of Defense Education Activity and Overseas International Schools. In addition to the expanded categories of readings and book titles, the new online iteration of Project READ is intended to be paperless. Registration and responses to books read may be completed online and via e-mail.
You can also put your name on the list to receive a free 2009 Resource Calendar and Toolkit (which should be available in the fall of 2008). Be sure to select your correct member status. Requests are filled on a first come, first served basis.

NSPS: DoD and OPM have officially declared a regulation dealing with pay for performance for most DoD employees. There has been a very real concern that DoD and OPM have mistakenly included DDESS employees as covered by the regulation. This aspect will be challenged by FEA. Nothing has gone through the House and Senate to convert our teachers/employees. Our lead guru in working these kinds of issues, HT Nguyen (otherwise respectfully known as the Executive Director/General Counsel for FEA), is currently on the road and due back in the office on October 14th. At that time he can bring us up to date on the latest. A recent article that has a positive message can be found at this address.

Task Groups: Task forces will soon convene to begin (or in some cases, continue) the review of various DODEA programs. Task Groups on which we have Association representation are:
AP Task Group; Assessment Task Group; HS Counseling Task Group; PreK-12 Literacy Task group; System-Wide PD Steering Committee; PTS Task Group, and a Virtual School Group.

Have a great three-day weekend!
Terry
