OPM DATA BREACH

There have been no significant developments or announcements about the OPM data breaches since the last update we sent out in August. Please be sure to read our most recent update on the situation, available at this link, and to avail yourself of any resources made available to you through OPM in the event you are listed as being potentially impacted by these data breaches.

LABOR DAY

Labor Day is coming up this Monday, September 7. Did you know the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York in 1882 and by 1894 the holiday was so widely-recognized that Congress declared the first Monday in September each year to be a national holiday? You can learn more about this holiday celebrating America's working people, including its millions of school employees, by going to this page.

FEA ELECTIONS

Nominations are now open for four at-large officer positions on the FEA Board of Directors (President, Vice President/Secretary-Treasurer, Human & Civil Rights Coordinator, and NEA Director for Federal) to be voted on by all Active FEA members later this school year. Nominations must be received by October 9, 2015. Any Active member of FEA can nominate themselves or another Active member for any of the offices by using the materials available at FEA's Election Page (materials have also been mailed to each building's FRS or Local Association President and will be arriving shortly).

HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH

The period from September 15 to October 15 is designated as National Hispanic Heritage Month. You can find lessons, activities and other resources-- all keyed to elementary, middle, and high school grade levels -- by going to this page.

ANOTHER GREAT BENEFIT OF MEMBERSHIP

Did you know that your membership in FEA/NEA provides you with a complimentary life insurance policy? Any Active, Staff, Reserve or Life member of the association qualifies for this automatic coverage at no extra cost. All you have to do is go to the NEA Member Benefits site and designate your beneficiary, here is that link. While visiting the Member Benefits site, be sure to check out the numerous other programs and discounts available to you as a member of the Association. The deals available through this site can save you as much or more than you pay in dues each year!

SF-50s

At the start of the school year, you should have received a new SF-50 form, marking your return to duty status. Please be sure to check this document carefully to ensure you are being paid on the correct salary lane and step, as well as that all other information is correct. You should similarly check all your pay statements throughout the year for errors. Immediately notify your HR rep of any problems you see and, if necessary, consult your FRS or other Association building rep for assistance.

STILL TRAVELING

I'll soon be wrapping up the European portion of my fall school visits and heading to the Pacific for school visits and FRS trainings before returning to the U.S. in the middle of the month to attend the FEA Stateside Region's Area Council meeting in Nashville. Many thanks to all those who have hosted me, arranged meetings, and especially those who have come out to meet with me already. I look forward to seeing many more FEA members and local leaders in the weeks ahead and, as always, I marvel at the outstanding jobs you all do no matter where you are located.

In addition, FEA Executive Director/General Counsel HT Nguyen will be attending the following events in Europe later this month:
UK FRS Training -- September 11
Bavaria FRS Training -- September 15
Europe Area Council Meeting -- September 16 and 17
Kaiserslautern Divisions I & II trainings -- September 18

STAY INFORMED

A reminder for all FEA members to subscribe to information updates from our Washington office by going to www.feaonline.org/listserv.htm. It's the best way to make sure you receive news about all the happenings affecting you as a DoDEA employee and Association member. You will need your FEA/NEA membership number (available on the back of the FEA Journal recently mailed to you, as well as all NEA publications sent to you) to sign up.
