RE: FEA President's Report
DATE: August 21, 2016

WELCOME BACK! - Whether you have been in session for a few weeks like many of our DDESS schools or you are just starting back, like most of our overseas schools, I hope you had a great summer and would like to wish you the best as you start the new school year! FEA, in our 60th year as the worldwide advocate within the federal system for educators' rights and for quality education, stands ready to support you. As always, there is a lot to share, so I will start right in.

TRAVEL - This year is already shaping up to be a busy travel year. Recently, I made a visit to Quantico to take part in their CCRSM training. On Sept 9 I will start a long "road trip" beginning in Nurmberg for the first of the European FRS trainings. From there I will travel to Kaiserslautern, then to Lakenheath, and then head to the Pacific for meetings in Korea, Okinawa and Japan, returning to the US on Oct 2. Whew! While the flights are long and jet lag gets worse as I get older, there is no substitute for meeting face to face with Association leaders and members.

UNIVERSITY CREDIT STILL AVAILABLE - For Elementary Teachers who completed the Go Math! eLearning course - The USD course registration reopened on August 15th and will remain open until the 25th. This will give K-5 math teachers who completed the Go Math! eLearning course over the summer the opportunity to register for the USD course if you did not register in July. The requirements for the USD course include completion of the Go Math! eLearning course and also application of the knowledge gained in the course by planning 2 units that follow the DoDEA Scope & Sequence and utilize the Go Math! materials.

TRANSFERS -- One of the concerns we continue to hear about from members is the Transfer Program. It is FEA's position that DoDEA must fully fund the Transfer Program to allow for robust movement opportunities for our current employees. If you feel strongly about this, please share your concerns with DoDEA Director Tom Brady. Please ensure that all such correspondence is polite and professional.

PAY -- If you, like too many of our members, continue to have unresolved pay problems, please see the FEA website for information on how to contact DoDEA and your elected officials to ask for help in resolving these concerns.

FEA MEDIA - The August issue of the FEA Journal should be coming to you soon if it hasn't arrived already (you can also read it online at our Web site). In addition to back to school information, it has information about upcoming FEA elections, etc.

MEMBERSHIP MATERIALS - If you school has not received membership materials from FEA, please send us a message at to let us know.

CONGRATULATIONS! - Three DoDEA schools have been awarded a "Green Ribbon" for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education. The DoDEA schools honored were Kimberly Hampton Primary School, Ft. Bragg; Van Voorhis ES, Ft. Knox; and Garmisch E/MS, Germany.

CONTACTING ME -- Please continue to use to contact me. As you know, working remotely with OWA often has its challenges, so email to my NEA address is much more efficient.

STAY UP TO DATE - The best way to find out what's going on within DoDEA is by regularly reading the updates put out by your FEA Area Directors and our DC office You can have my electronic updates sent directly to your Inbox by going here to sign up.

THANK YOU!- I especially want to begin this school year by thanking the many FRSs, FRs and Local Association Officers who have taken on these roles in our schools. The work you do is so important for our schools, our members, and our students.

AND OF COURSE -- Thank you and a very big "Good Luck" to all of our new and returning Association members around the world. You are the greatest faculty and staff anywhere and it is FEA's extreme honor to represent you. I hope you all have a great SY 16-17!
