Re: FEA President's Report
Date: June 11, 2009
NO CUTS TO KINDERGARTEN AIDES -- By now, you've hopefully heard that DoDEA will be lowering the PTR in some full-day kindergarten classes next school year to 18:1 and, equally importantly, those classrooms will not lose their full-time aides. FEA met with Dr. Miles this week and was assured that the combination of lower PTR and full-time aides will not be limited to just the 2009-2010 school year. FEA wants to thank all of its members -- as well as parents, students and other interested parties -- for their actions that helped to bring this about. By retaining those classroom aides, DoDEA is helping to maintain a strong and safe educational environment for students in those classes.
MIDDLE SCHOOL CUTS -- FEA continues to present our concerns about proposals by DoDEA to increase class sizes for middle schools, starting in the 2010-2011 school year. So far, there appears to be no change in Dr. Miles' position regarding these increases. FEA will continue to advocate for students and educators.
EARLY RETURN DAYS FOR PSCD TEACHERS -- Teachers of Preschool Services for Children with Disabilities (PSCD) are to work with their building principals to determine how many early return days they will need at the start of the school year to conduct home visits with their students. Those early return days are also to include teachers' Special Education aides or paraprofessionals. Headquarters will be sending guidance on this issue to principals soon.
CHILDCARE NACI -- Some members in Europe a few days ago received an information packet regarding Childcare National Agency Check Investigations (CNACI). Those packets were apparently sent out prematurely, before DoDEA Headquarters could put out guidance on them. At FEA's request, Headquarters has sent a message to those educators who received these packets, explaining that no action on the CNACI is required at this time and that further guidance will be sent to them after the start of the 2009-2010 school year.
START DATE FOR SURE START -- Dr. Miles sent out a memo saying that Tuesday, September 15, would be the start date for the Sure Start program next school year. This would represent a change from past practice and past agreements. FEA will be taking immediate legal action.
SURVEY -- All FEA members are reminded to go to www.feaonline.org/survey.htm to complete our membership survey prior to the July 1 deadline. Your feedback is crucial to helping FEA make sure its members' views are represented.
FEA ANNUAL MEETING -- The FEA Annual Membership meeting will be held June 30 and July 1 at the Marriott Mission Valley hotel in San Diego, California, just prior to the NEA Representative Assembly. All FEA members, Active or Retired, are invited and highly encouraged to attend. See www.feaonline.org/ra for more information.
SUMMER BREAK -- I want to wish all of our members a fantastic summer. We invite our members to subscribe to our listserv at www.feaonline.org/listserv.htm so you can receive email updates on any breaking news during the summer. I hope you all have a very safe, relaxing and rejuvenating break. To those members who are retiring or leaving DoDEA, I wish you all the best.
Have a great summer!
