From: Michael Priser, FEA President
Re: FEA President's Report
Date: June 1, 2010
I hope everyone had a safe and restful weekend, and I hope you all took time on Memorial Day to remember the sacrifices of our military members.
ENCROACHMENT OF TIME -- Back in September, FEA issued a legal update asking DoDDS members to keep track of management actions/directives that encroached on your time to perform your duties as an educator. FEA providing a form our members could use to track such violations with the intention of submitting the information to FEA's legal department ( see original update here). As we near the end of the school year in DoDDS, FEA is preparing a legal update to explain how to submit that information to our legal department. Look for the update, to be posted on www.feaonline.org and sent out via our listserv, in the next several days. If you have any questions, please contact FEA at email@example.com
TRANSFER MOVES -- If you are being reassigned this summer through the DoDDS Transfer Program and were planning to use your RAT travel to do so, it may be possible for you to instead relocate via a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move and retain your RAT travel for use in the summer of 2011. FEA is preparing a legal update to explain this issue and will release that update via our listserv and the FEA web site within a few days. Even if you have already scheduled your transfer move, this information may help you to retain RAT for next year. We urge all FEA members who received transfer placements to keep an eye out for this information update.
STAY INFORMED -- As indicated by the above two items, the FEA listserv is a valuable resource for members. If you've not done so already, we urge all FEA members to sign up for the listserv (you will need your FEA membership ID number to register). Doing so will ensure you receive updates as soon as they go out, including over the summer.
RETIRING MEMBERS -- Any FEA members retiring from DoDEA this school year who have signed up for FEA Pre-Retired Membership should contact the FEA Washington office to notify us of your pending retirement. FEA needs this notification so that we know to activate your retired membership and ensure that you transition seamlessly to your new status. Anyone looking for information on FEA Pre-Retired Membership can find it here. Let me take this opportunity as well to thank and congratulate all of our retiring members for your service to military dependents and their families. No one needs to remind you of the important role you've played in the lives of countless young people. Please accept my best wishes as you move into the next phase of your lives, and thank you for being a part of FEA.
NEA GREEN -- NEA's Green Across America program offers grants up to $1,000 to help implement innovative programs and events to excite students about sustainability and "going green." For more information, go to www.neamb.com/green.
APOLOGY -- The May issue of the FEA Journal erroneously left Lester Middle School (Okinawa) off of a list of DoDEA schools that achieved 100 percent FEA membership this school year. FEA is very sorry for this error and apologizes to all of our members at Lester MS for this oversight. Your support of FEA is tremendous and greatly appreciated.
SUMMER ENRICHMENT PROGRAM SURVEY -- For those teachers participating in
the Summer Enrichment Program, be aware that DoDEA Headquarters will be conducting a survey at the end in order to obtain feedback on the program. This is the same survey that was conducted last year. FEA encourages your participation.
ANNUAL MEETINGS -- FEA will hold its Annual Membership Meeting June 30 and July 1 at the Chateau Bourbon Hotel in New Orleans. This meeting is open to all FEA members, Active or Retired, and we highly encourage any member who will be in the area to attend so they can ask questions or hear reports from the FEA Board and Staff about the status of your organization. As always, our meeting is held immediately before the NEA Annual Meeting and Representative Assembly, also in New Orleans. FEA members have already selected over 30 delegates to represent them at the NEA meeting, at which members vote on policies and procedures to govern the direction of NEA. THANK YOU -- I recently concluded my final school visits of the year with trips to Fort Stewart (Georgia) and Laurel Bay (South Carolina). I want to thank our FEA leaders and members at those bases for their hospitality and for taking the time to meet with me. No matter how many DoD schools I visit, I continue to be amazed by the level of dedication and professionalism our educators show on a daily basis. FEA is honored to represent such outstanding educators.
HAPPY SUMMER -- I'll put out one final update before DoDDS schools wrap up on June 18. Several of our DDESS schools, however, have already finished for the summer and the rest will be closing soon. I wish all our members a very safe, relaxing and rejuvenating summer. Please know that the work you have done this year (and every year) is so very, very important to the lives of our students and the military community. I hope you feel the pride you deserve to have in the outstanding work you do everyday. Congratulations on another outstanding year in the service of education and our military families!
