FROM: Michael Priser, FEA President
RE: FEA President's Report
DATE: November 6, 2012
POSTAGE ISSUE -- FEA has filed an Association Grievance over the issue of members erroneously being denied reimbursement for shipment of up to 100 pounds of excess baggage (per family member) between their duty station and home of record during RAT travel. However, based upon a conversation last week with DoDEA Director Marilee Fitzgerald, we expect this issue to be resolved without further litigation. We will, of course, proceed with the Association Grievance if the issue is not resolved in a timely manner.
LEGAL UPDATES -- FEA's Legal Department has just released a pair of legal updates, both of which are available on FEA's Web site, at this page. The first deals with the 10-year rule for Living Quarters Allowance. The second update is about the above postage reimbursement issue. We urge our members to read both of these updates by going to this page.
CONGRATULATIONS -- FEA Member Daniele Massey, a mathematics teacher at Vilseck High School in Germany, was recently named DoDEA Teacher of the Year. Way to go, Daniele!
NEW JOURNAL -- The November issue of the FEA Journal quarterly newsletter will be mailed to all members later this week. Look for it to arrive in your mailbox shortly. The Journal will also be posted on the FEA Web site in PDF format by the end of this week, in case you just can't wait to read it.
ELECTIONS -- No, not THAT election! FEA is now accepting nominations for the election of at-large officers to our Board of Directors. The seats to be filled this year are FEA President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, NEA Director, and Human & Civil Rights Coordinator. Nomination materials have been sent to all FEA building representatives/Local Presidents and are also available at www.feaonline.org, as well as being printed in the new FEA Journal. Information on a proposed amendment to the FEA Constitution is also available from those same sources. Voting will take place in March and April 2013.
TRAVEL -- I will be paying a visit to our members in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, later this month. Cuba is certainly one of the most unique locations in all of DoDEA and, as always, I look forward to visiting with our members there to update them on various issues and hear directly from them.
OPEN SEASON -- Remember, Federal Benefits Open Season begins next Monday, November 12, and runs through December 10. Get information at OPM"s Web site.
AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK -- November 11-17 is American Education Week and Wednesday, November 14, is Education Support Professional Day. Congratulations and a very big "thank you" to all of our members for all you do throughout the year to make a difference in the lives of DoDEA children. Get more information at NEA's American Education Week page.
OBSERVANCE -- November is recognized at National American Heritage Month in the U.S. Visit www.nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov for information and resources you can use in the classroom.
VETERANS DAY -- This Sunday, November 11, is Veterans Day. Please take some time this weekend to think of all our veterans have done for us and, especially, take this opportunity to show your gratitude to the many veterans who we see everyday on the bases where we all work. Their service and sacrifice in defense of our freedom cannot be praised highly enough. To the many military veterans in the FEA membership and the many more throughout the DoDEA community and beyond: thank you so much!
