October 15 2010 FEA President's ReportTo: FEA Members and Local Leaders Worldwide
From: Michael Priser, FEA President
Re: FEA President's Report
Date: October 15, 2010
BACKGROUND CHECKS -- FEA has become aware that some district offices have been contacting employees about conducting background investigations, requiring lengthy forms to be completed along with fingerprint submissions. FEA-Washington has been working with DoDEA Headquarters on this issue and we have not reached an agreement on the implementation of this process. We have asked that school districts hold their procedures in abeyance pending our negotiations with Arlington. DoDEA Headquarters has agreed. If any employee continues to receive such notices, please let your building representative know immediately.
TEST SCORES -- I know this information has been out for a few weeks, but I wanted to add my congratulations to DoDEA educators and students (as well as their families) for the continuing excellence you demonstrated on the recently release 2010 Terra Nova test scores ( see Stars & Stripes story). While it is important to note that test scores paint only a partial picture of student achievement, it is reassuring to know that educators and students have so far been able to overcome the cuts to academic programs and professional development, among other non-administrative resources, that were enacted by DoDEA management during the past two years. DoDEA has been scoring far above national averages on these tests for many years and, thanks to your hard work and dedication, we will continue to do so. Well done! Now, let's get DoDEA to restore the cuts that were made so we can be sure true academic progress, beyond what is reflected in a standardized test score, does not suffer.
100 PERCENT -- Byrd Elementary at Yokohama, Japan, has reached 100 percent membership in the Association for this school year. Congratulations, and thank you to the staff and local leadership at Byrd for your support of FEA. We want to recognize every building that reaches this amazing accomplishment, so please let us know if your school hits 100 percent membership by sending a message to us at email@example.com
BOARD MEETING -- The FEA Board of Directors will be meeting here in Washington DC all of next week (October 18-22). As always, there are many issues affecting our members to be discussed. In addition, the board will be meeting with a number of distinguished visitors, including NEA President Dennis Van Roekel, NEA Vice President Lily Eskelsen, and NEA Secretary-Treasurer Becky Pringle. We will also be meeting with representatives from DoDEA Headquarters. Look for information about the meeting from your Area Director in the weeks ahead.
HEALTHY SCHOOL LUNCH CONTEST -- First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move! campaign, in association with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is challenging school nutrition professionals, chefs, students, parents and interested community members to create tasty, healthy, exciting new recipes for inclusion on school lunch menus across the country. Winning teams will win $12,000 in prizes and be invited to prepare their nutrition-packed recipes alongside White House chefs. Recipes for Healthy Kids Competition teams should start forming now! Take the lead by pulling together team members and start creating innovative recipes. Encourage your school community to get involved NOW! The clock is ticking! Deadline is December 30, 2010!
