RE: FEA President's Report
DATE: January 5, 2018

Happy New Year! I hope all our members had a wonderful holiday break and I wish you the very best in this new year!

The deadline for transfer applicants to amend their applications is this coming Tuesday, January 9, at 5pm Eastern Time. That is also the deadline for principals to approve applications. DoDEA management will lock the transfer database immediately after this deadline, meaning neither educators nor principals will be able to login. FEA urges members to review their transfer applications and make any amendments well ahead of the January 9 deadline. You should also print a copy of your application in case you need to refer to it later.

FRSs should review the vacancy list posted at DoDEA's HR page (see the link for the vacancy list near the bottom of the page) and confirm that all full-time vacancies at your schools are included in the list. The vacancy list was updated on January 3. Please immediately report any missing vacancies to FEA's Connie Shanaghan at this email.

The transfer round is scheduled to begin next Thursday, January 11. Connie Shanaghan and FEA Pacific Area Director Melanie Horton will be monitoring the process and I'll be joining them for several days as well. Per the usual agreement between FEA and management, we cannot release any information about specific placements until the transfer round is complete and all transfer reassignment notifications have been sent out by management via e-mail.

Members can email a copy of their FINAL transfer application to Connie Shanaghan at this email by 5pm Eastern Time on January 9. Connie will verify that it is included in the transfer round that is scheduled to begin on January 11.

The latest deadline to avoid a government shutdown is January 19. FEA and NEA continue to lobby decision makers on Capitol Hill and at the Pentagon in hopes of convincing them to keep our schools open and school-level staff working for DoDEA students and families, even if a shutdown becomes a reality.

I am currently in Chicago, along with FEA Executive Director/General Counsel HT Nguyen, for a NEA Financial Forum. On January 8th, I will fly to Cuba to meet with our teachers at Guantanamo. I look forward to the chance to meet with our members there again, answer questions and hear concerns. Once I return from Cuba, I will join our team at the Transfer Round. While I am in Cuba I will have very limited access to email, so please be patient if I do not respond promptly.

Once again our NEA family has been impacted by natural disasters. This time it is the wild fires in California which have impacted NEA Members and schools there. If you are interested in donating to help victims of these terrible fires, go to this site.

NEA recently awarded FEA funding through its Read Across America grant program that will be distributed to nine schools that submitted requests back in November to help fund their reading events this March 2. We were able to provide funding to all those who applied. Thank you NEA! Be sure to visit NEA's Read Across America page for information and ideas to help you promote your reading event. You can also download a sample article/release you can customize and send to your local media by clicking here (right click to download).

The NEA Foundation Global Learning Fellowship offers educators 12 months of professional development. The NEA Foundation staff, partners, and field experts support Global Learning Fellows as they participate in online coursework, webinars, and peer learning communities, including a two-day professional development workshop in Washington, DC, and an international field study experience. Any Association member who is an active K-12 teacher may apply by going to the NEA Foundation site. The deadline to apply is February 5, 2018.
