As you all are aware, management of the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) has submitted a proposal to Congress asking for authority to strip its employees of bargaining rights and civil service protections, among other harmful changes. DoDEA is seeking to include those harmful changes in the 2019 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Our NEA Government Relations (NEA GR) colleagues have been speaking with key House and Senate Armed Services Committee staff (who have jurisdiction over the NDAA bill) this week on this issue. At this point, all of the conversations with both House and Senate Democrats and Republicans have been positive and encouraging that there is not support to include this proposal in the bill this year.

That being said, this is a long process (the final NDAA bill is not normally signed into law until the fall) and we encourage every FEA Member to continue to engage on this topic with their Members of Congress. NEA GR will continue to keep us informed as we move through this process.

FEA is incredibly grateful to the staff of NEA Government Relations, who have been working this issue seemingly non-stop since we learned of it earlier this month. It is just the latest (but possibly the greatest!) example of the importance and value of having a professional association to work on your behalf.
